Intensive Outpatient Rehab

Intensive Outpatient Program for Substance Abuse and Mental Health

When struggling with substance use or co-occurring mental health challenges, you deserve care that meets you where you are. At New Day Recovery, we understand that recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) offer a flexible yet structured path to healing—especially for those who don’t require 24/7 supervision but still need a high level of support.

Whether you’re stepping down from residential treatment or starting your journey, this guide will help you better understand IOP, the therapies involved, and how to know if it’s the right next step for you.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured form of outpatient treatment that allows you to live at home while attending therapy sessions several times a week.  IOP requires a minimum of 9 hours a week of treatment, typically divided across multiple days.

IOP sits between standard outpatient and higher levels of care such as Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) or inpatient rehab. It’s ideal for those who no longer need round-the-clock supervision but still benefit from consistent clinical support.

Why Choose IOP Over Inpatient Treatment?

There are many reasons why an IOP might be the right choice:

  • Flexibility: You can continue to live at home, attend work, or care for your family while still receiving quality treatment.
  • Step-Down Support: If you’ve completed inpatient or PHP care, IOP can help you transition back into everyday life while staying grounded in recovery.
  • Accessibility: IOP offers more structure than traditional outpatient treatment but is less time-intensive than inpatient programs.

It’s also an excellent option if you’re beginning treatment and need more than weekly therapy but don’t require full-time care.

What to Expect in an IOP at New Day Recovery

Our IOP includes a minimum of 9 hours per week of individual and group therapy, along with support through 12-step or similar recovery frameworks.

You’ll work on developing tools that support long-term recovery through:

  • Assertiveness and communication training
  • Relapse prevention strategies
  • Skill-building and psychoeducation groups
  • Stress management and emotional regulation techniques
  • One-on-one sessions with licensed therapists
  • Group therapy and peer support
  • 12-step program integration or alternate recovery paths

Types of Therapy Offered in IOP

At New Day Recovery, your treatment plan is built around evidence-based practices tailored to your unique history. Core therapy types include:

  • Individual Therapy: Often rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or trauma-focused approaches, this space allows you to explore root causes and build healthier coping mechanisms.
  • Group Therapy: Led by experienced clinicians, these sessions offer connection, shared wisdom, and the chance to build confidence in communicating your experiences. Topics might include grief, loss, self-esteem, and emotional resilience.

How Long Does IOP Treatment Last?

Most IOP participants spend 12–16 weeks in treatment, although length may vary depending on clinical needs and progress. A typical IOP schedule includes 3–4 sessions per week, each lasting about three hours.

Following IOP, many clients step down to standard outpatient therapy to maintain support while rebuilding daily routines.
